HAMMOND
& HALLECK EARN NEWPORT REC AWARDS
6
th Grader Ricky Hammond was given The Newport Recreation Department's
Davis Hemingway award for 2008. Ricky was among 70+ kids and over
100 adults that crowded into the Newport Rec on February 21 st
for their annual 5 th -8 th grade Basketball awards ceremony.
Each team received certificates, team pictures, and a sportsmanship
and most improved player awards. The Davis Hemingway award is
given annually to a Newport youth who excels on and off the court,
is respected by their peers, works hard to improve his/herself,
inspires his/her peers to improve and leads by example. Ricky
earned High honor roll this quarter, always participated with
a smile on his face, win or lose. He led his team by example,
by always showing great sportsmanship, in helping others up from
the ground, and giving his best effort on every play, all the
time. His spirit and dedication shined through on the court and
while he was off the court he was a positive influence in cheering
his teammates on.
Glenn
Halleck earned the Lilyan Wright Volunteer of the year award for
2007. Glenn coached flag football and Basketball in 2007, was
a member of the Recreation Advisory committee, and led many efforts
on Rec projects throughout the year. His behind the scenes work
saved us on many occasions. Glenn helped restore the playground
after some vandalism, helped remove trees after windstorms in
the town forest. He also was brave enough to give us his cell
phone to call him anytime we needed anything. We often called,
and he always came through.
The
NRD would like to congratulate these fine young men for their
accomplishments in 2007. With over 150 volunteers in a years time,
we thank them all for their hardwork and dedication to help teach
our kids the value of teamwork, sportsmanship amidst competition.
You never have to look very far to find great kids, they are everywhere.
Coach one today.
